Frequently Asked Questions:
General Engraving questions
1) Q: Is it possible to have a photo engraved?
A: Generally the answer is yes, although with a portrait of a person or animal, it must be a very clear picture, portrait quality. I will take the photo myself if necessary, including your pets.
2) Q: What do you suggest as a gift for a man with everything?
A: Always depends on your budget, but the favourite is a pint beer tankard or whisky glass, wine glass, then comes decanter, ice bucket, paperweight, picture frame and much more. It can have just a name or initials, birthday number if it is a milestone birthday. A bigger budget can accommodate a family crest or favourite past time like shooting or golf. Even a cartoon with a fun statement or poem. The fact it is personalised is always apreciated.
3) Q: What about a gift for a woman with everything?
A: Well the favourite is a wine glass, champagne flute, vase, jug, trinket box, crystal photo frame, paperweight. Again even just a beautiful monogram can be very effective, or a name and date, (big round numbers are not popular with women...although I have had to engrave "oh no four oh!!" before.) Flowers are always a perfect decoration, then again whatever suits the character of the lady.
4) Q: Does engraving weaken the glass?
A: I will engrave according to the type of glass. I generally do not stock glass that is too thin. My thicker crystal I will engrave deeply, but the finer crystal and glass I will "surface engrave" . I also check for any stresses which are not visable with the naked eye. No, my engraving does not weaken te glass.
5) Q: Can you put colour in the engraving?
A: Yes I can, but prefer to do this on flat glass or something not likely to be washed often like wine bottles. I will only add colour to simple sandblasting.
6) Q: Would you hand engrave a bulk order.
A: Generally no, if it was absolutely necessary I will but it would be very expensive and no 2 would be exactly the same.
7) Q: Can you engrave on wine bottles?
A: YES
8) Q: Can you engrave on cut crystal?
A: Yes, both in the spaces (especially if it has a blank area for engraving) and over the cuts if necessary.
9) Q: Can you engrave anything on glass?
A: Yes but I reserve the right to refuse to engrave what I consider questionable content.
10) Q: Can you engrave onto coloured glass.
A: Yes although it depends on what glass it is as to the effect it will produce. Cheap glass like a brown bottle will be very dull without colour.
11) Q: If I bring an engraved glass to you can you add to it?
A: Very much depends on the engraving. If it is hand engraved and signed by someone else then no. If it is simply sandblasted then yes , as long as the sandblasting is up to my standard.
12) Q: Can you copy an engraved glass that I have.
A: Depends on the technique used. Easily yes, if it is just sandblasted, but another technique generally no, it will never be exactly the same.
13) Q: If I buy a glass from your eBay shop or showroom can you add a name?
A: Usually I can if these is a space.
14) Q: Do you provide a gift service?
A: Yes.
15) Q: Do you sign your work?
A: All my hand engraving one off pieces are signed and dated and accompanied by a certificate. If I am simply sandblasting, especially a bulk order, then the answer is no.
16) Q: Can you work in situ?
A: Yes, providing it is safe.
17) Q: Can you engrave toughened or bullet proof glass?
A: Yes if necessary, have engraved both successfully before, but really would rather not.
18) Q: Which is the best side to engrave on for a panel of glass?
A: Engraving lgenerally ooks best when viewed through the glass, unless it is coloured. A window should have the engraving on the inside. It is effective for some designs to use both sides for a 3D effect.
